This release also has some minor fixes. While most TacO releases don't require much care when unpacking and you can simply overwrite your previous install with the new one, if you'd like to reap the benefits of the marker cleanup you'll need to clean up the contents of the POIs folder in your original install before unpacking this new one.

You can download the latest build here.

Change notes:

Win 8.1 support should really be fixed now (please let me know!)

The defaulttoggle setting was propagating to child categories, which made it impractical

Cleaned up the default markers that come with TacO

Added additional thread safety around marker pack loading

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2224744672813955603.post-9015691585849716032022-03-27T23:38:00.009+02:002022-03-30T10:54:20.494+02:00Automatic Marker Pack Updates!
Hi!

Marker packs are a bit of a hassle. Over the years the most frequent questions I got all related to missing markers, where to download marker packs, etc. This ends today. The latest build of TacO adds support to download and keep updating marker packs from a curated and ever growing list of packages. The overlay automatically checks if a newer version of a pack is available and updates everything seamlessly.
Best of all, the list itself isn't baked in to the overlay, which means that additional packs can be added without the need to update TacO itself. (The always up to date list itself can be found here.)

If you're the creator of a marker pack that's available for download and would like to see it supported natively in TacO with automatic updates, contact me and we'll make it happen!

You can download the latest build here.

Change notes:

Added online marker package support

Added new submenu to the tactical menu where the online sync feature and the sync of individual marker packs can be turned on/off

Fixed a minor crash that could happen when the map timer's api check was running during shutdown

Fixed an issue where routes weren't progressing correctly

Fixed copypaste triggering on invisible markers as well when pressing the action key

Toggling marker categories now happens only once even with overlapping markers that would toggle the same category

Marker triggering no longer stops at the first found marker at the player's location

Fixed invisible markers being able to be triggered

This update brings some changes to the localization strings, non-English translations must be updated by their maintainers.

Note: release archive updated due to a debug feature disabling keyboard input (2022-03-28 8:30 CET)

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2224744672813955603.post-50676670814459698042022-03-26T22:55:00.010+01:002022-03-30T10:54:54.554+02:00Context Menu and Compatibility Upgrades

Hi everyone!

With the recent news that the End of Dragons isn't the end of the GW2 story (and also playing through the excellent expansion finally) I'm feeling the TacO development vibe again. Since I made the overlay open-source and I was away a bit, there have been various developments, and there were some people (mainly the Blish-Hud devs) who took some of my original ideas and ran with them. Various excellent additions have been implemented to the marker pack format, and I took a couple days to bring TacO closer to the current state of the marker platform.

The latest build adds support for clipboard handling, default marker category disabling and festival tracking. I also loved the idea to hide irrelevant marker categories to help with the clutter in the category context menu. This build also reaps the rewards of the Bugsplat crash tracking already with a bunch of rare crashes fixed. There have also been further performance optimizations around the TacO menu and the startup time.

Map aware context menu decluttering

You can download the latest build from here.

Change notes:

TacO menu performance has been significantly boosted

Marker category list now hides irrelevant categories (that don't contain markers for the current map or that are related to completed achievements/achievement bits)

Hidden marker categories can be selected to still show the full category tree

Added TacO menu setting to opt out of crash logging to Bugsplat

Compatibility: Changed XML parser to be case insensitive

Compatibility: TacO now supports the automatic clipboard copy functionality

Added TacO menu setting to disable clipboard use

Compatibility: TacO now supports default enabled/disabled settings for marker categories

Added EoD map timers (thx Eclipsetech)

Added Dragonstorm map timer (thx Taschenbuch)

Fixed a crash that happened when there wasn't enough GPU memory to create a trail

Fixed a crash that happened on exit due to the double deletion of a logging backend

Fixed log file not always flushing containing data on exit

Fixed a crash that happened on exit when the API was being queried during shutdown

Compatibility: TacO now supports festival related markers and automatically hides them when the festival isn't active

Fixed a minor crash on exit that happened when an empty marker file was to be saved

(Hopefully) Fixed windows 8.1 issues that came up with the last builds

Rearranged all of the TacO menu's toggle indicators to be on the left side

Fixed some issues with the lost golden badge markers

Optimized loading time a bit

This update brings some changes to the localization strings, non-English translations must be updated by their maintainers.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com25tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2224744672813955603.post-3369091032294987982022-03-23T23:09:00.003+01:002022-03-23T23:09:33.396+01:00Performance Boost
Hi!

Pre Super Adventure Box TacO development is ramping up, this time with a bunch of stability and performance upgrades. The Bugsplat integration in the previous build already pointed out some previously unknown issues, proving its worth. There have also been dramatic performance upgrades. Running with uncapped framerates, with some large popular marker packs loaded the uncapped framerate of TacO has jumped from 120fps to ~2k fps, for a performance boost of about 16x.

Change notes:

Fixed the handling of the Characters API endpoint - this should no longer crash if the API returns unexpected results

Added additional checks to avoid a crash related to toggling menus in rare cases

Added warning popup windows for when TacO is missing important data files (mostly happening when the overlay is run straight from the archive without unpacking)

Performance: replaced strings with string ids in the marker category system

Performance: trail textures are now cached more aggressively

Performance: the small fonts now have outlined versions as well and the outline doesn't need to be rendered separately using a 3x3 display

Performance: Teamspeak integration is now only ticked if the TS3 window is open

Performance: category visibility settings are now more aggressively cached

Performance: trails and markers are now bucketed for each map id, meaning a lot fewer checks per frame

Performance/Stability: TacO now waits for the mumble link to update more aggressively

The new build can be downloaded from here.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2224744672813955603.post-75908032555599211382022-03-21T20:57:00.005+01:002022-03-21T20:58:47.629+01:00BugSplat crash tracking
Hi!

In order to better be able to track unreported and rare crashes, I've integrated the BugSplat crash tracking system into the latest TacO build (#53). This system sends crash reports (basically the same information that has been logged before) into the cloud for easier sorting and analysis. As crash reports from the overlay have been few and far between lately I don't expect there to be too many reports for now, this is more a convenience feature for me to track down any Schrödinbugs that may rear their ugly head.

The information that is sent is the TacO process dump file and the TacO log file of the crashed session. No identifying or GW2 account related information is sent (since the overlay doesn't have access to that anyway), however I'm anticipating that there will still be some, who'd like to opt out of sending crash info my way. In order to turn off crash reporting all you need to do is to set the SendCrashDump value in the TacOConfig.xml to 0.

You can download the new build here.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2224744672813955603.post-79531867984540448002022-03-20T00:03:00.001+01:002022-03-20T00:03:23.428+01:00Minor bugfix release
Hi there!

With new marker packs coming out for the expansion I finally managed to take some time to play the game again and of course found a bug that made achievement hunting an issue.

This minor release should fix the problems regarding achievement tracking and poi visibility.

You can download the new build from here.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2224744672813955603.post-48305424267231437822021-09-22T23:26:00.007+02:002021-09-22T23:27:15.553+02:00Post data-loss maintenance build
Hi.

As I noted earlier, about a year ago I had a huge data loss in the TacO codebase that resulted in the wipe of the progress between builds #43 and #47. It's been quite a while since I logged in to GW2 for anything more than the daily login rewards, and that has also become a sporadic thing. I haven't even played the last living world episode yet. I'm focusing on work and a new big sideproject that's taking up my time, and I find myself waiting for the new Diablo games instead of GW2. So... for the time being at least, I've moved on from Guild Wars 2. This may not be a permanent thing, I'll definitely be back for the next expansion, however this also means that I don't have the time/energy/will to focus on TacO.

I've built the overlay to be a robust piece of software that can stand on its own even in times where I may not be able to tend to it, which woked out quite well, I'd say. It hasn't been open-source for several reasons, the main one being that my previous job was the development of a UI engine and the codebase under TacO could have been seen as a derivative product (even though it predates my working at the company, but it wasn't worth the risk based on some of the stories I heard). Since about a year now that issue is gone (and by now any non-compete clause as well). The codebase under TacO is now being sunsetted in other projects that use it as well, and this gives me the possibility to (for the time being at least) hand over the reins to the community.

So. The Guild Wars 2 Tactical Overlay is going open source.

One important note: the code above isn't _exactly_ the same as the last release due to an unfortunate data loss suffered last autumn. I've done my best to recover the lost code of the last couple builds and I think it should all be there, but the newer features are completely untested and require reevaluation.

I made no attempts to clean up the code, so you'll see some "yeah this is a hobby project" level hackery in there including global variables and copypasted code all over the place. You have been warned. (The code is provided as-is)

Visual Studio 2019 and the June 2010 DirectX SDK are required to build it.

Hopefully this will finally satisfy all the opensource zealots I got so much flack from over the years out there as well.

The source code of TacO is released under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2224744672813955603.post-88657060696305503262021-04-07T10:34:00.004+02:002021-09-22T08:11:02.487+02:00Alternate download link added
Hi there

I got some reports on the dropbox link not working for some people so I added a temporary alternate download link to the top right menu.
After the multibox update the need for several supported GW2 API keys came up for people who are using multiple accounts. This has been a request for a while from people who do a lot of account hopping as well. This latest update adds multi-API-key support with automatic account detection based on the selected character name so if you have multiple API keys added to the overlay it will always pick the right one and display information regarding to the currently played account. This should be quite useful for dungeon/raid progress tracking on multiple accounts. In order for this to work, the API keys used in TacO need to have the 'characters' permission.

API Keys can be added, edited and removed in the TacO menu.

I also found a temporary workaround for the keyboard input issues that have been plaguing the overlay since the beginning, particularly when it comes to textboxes. The API-key input field and the notepad window should be a lot friendlier to use now.
This update also reintroduces the missing guild races and a bunch of other default markers that went missing during the migration of the codebase to git.

You can download the new build here.

Change notes:

Fixed TacO eating too much CPU when GW2 not running and TacO set to not close with the game

Removed some unused timing code

Added support for multiple GW2 API keys, the overlay will automatically pick the first API key corresponding to the current account based on the logged in character's name. API keys require the 'characters' capability for this to work.

Fixed a bug where the TP tracker wouldn't display the listing prices of sub 1 silver items correctly

Re-added some markers to the archive that have been missing since build 43 (Guild races, a couple adventures, etc) - sorry about this, they went missing during the move from hg to git

Tweaked the keyboard input code a bit so that when typing in TacO textboxes GW2 will no longer react to the keypresses

Fixed copy and paste not functioning in TacO textboxes

Removed a bunch of unnecessary API calls when editing API keys

Another bunch of oft-requested features and fixes coming in after a long weekend spent doing real-life stuff. The major changes include support for GW2's automatic downscale mode when the GW2 window is too small, and the addition of keybindable actions to most major functionalities. None of these are set by default to minimize keybind clutter.

You can download the latest build here.

Change log:

Added command line to log for easier debugging of mumble command line issues

Added support for GW2's window-too-small scaling

Added support for GW2 windows that have been renamed

Fixed minimap markers not being affected by color and alpha tags

TacO will now ignore invalid resolutions when trying to resize the swapchain

Toggling a TacO window off will now only hide it instead of destroying it, this will reduce API loads and improve responsiveness when opening the window again

Added optional keybinds to toggle most functionalities of the overlay: The Tactical Layer, Range Circles, Compass, Locational Timers, HP grids, Mouse Highlight, Map Timer Window, TS3 Window, Marker Editor Window, Notepad Window, Raid and Dungeon Progress Windows, TP Tracker Window and Window Edit Mode

Fixed Compact Map Timer option not working when selecting it for the first time

Added option to toggle the TP icon highlight

Added ability to create mouse tooltips

Fixed a typo in the map timers

Added tooltip to map timer events

Set the default mode of the map timer to compact

Increased the default height of the map timer window

with all this time on my hands I managed to coordinate with ReActif about a number of issues he and the people using his marker pack encountered. I have tracked down all of the issues and even added some convenience functionalities to remove keybinds one by one or completely disable them from inside the overlay.

You can download the new build here.

Change notes:

Added extra logging to track down some common issues

Fixed rebinding keys removing a random config option instead of the old key setting

Added png files missing from the last two builds

Fixed achievement related markers only working properly is the achievementBit was also set (even for achievements that don't have bits)

Added setting to disable all keybinds

Added possibility to unbind keys in keybinding mode

Mid-frame texture atlas defragmentation will only be logged for the first 100 times each run, this should reduce the size of the produced log file when this is the case

Fixed erroneous reporting in the log of not being able to open a zip file

Fixed bad API use for LoadLibrary function

Added extra logging for not loaded images to help marker pack creators

Removed some log messages that people have been misinterpreting

General log file sanitization

Fixed support link

Fixed images referenced in .taco files not showing up when the category was defined inside the .taco file but the marker wasn't

Fixed default marker icon not visible sometimes

Fixed force off visibility for in-game trails not working

the last build introduced a new way of rendering TacO in windows, which should be more performant... However this meant the use of an API that's unavailable on Windows 7. This new build fixes this issue by adding a fallback to the old method. Please guys if possible update to an actually supported OS, it's for your own security as well :D

Also added a bunch of new features that were on the top of the todo that will add quality of life changes and new possibilities to marker pack creators, most importantly: markers can now have info text assigned to them, so many of the large markers with text layers can be replaced. This will ease the load on the dynamic texture atlas and help fix performance (and huge log size) issues.

In order to add an info text to a marker the info xml tag must be used. The range in which the text will be visible can be set with the infoRange xml tag. If several markers are showing text in the same area, the texts will be displayed below each other.

As always, the latest build can be downloaded from here.

Change notes:

Added fallback for Windows 7 - Please consider updating from a not supported OS, guys...

Reorganized the menu a bit to be more compact (added a submenu for tactical overlay settings)

Added a "Support GW2 TacO development" menu item

Increased the size of the dynamic texture atlas to 2048x2048, this will help with performance issues up to a point

Updated the update checker mechanism as it was no longer functioning correctly

Added the ability to add info text to markers, the text shows up below the enemy health bar

Added a toggle to turn marker info text on/off

Added global marker opacity settings (three levels: solid, transparent, faded) for in-game and map markers

Added a menu item to reload all markers and categories without restarting TacO

Added a menu item to remove all markers from the current map instance that were placed by the player

Range circles will no longer show up on the world map view

This update brings some changes to the localization strings, non-English translations must be updated by their maintainers.

Good news for multiboxers, the LaunchBuddy devs and I worked these past couple days to add support for the new TacO multiboxing functionality into LaunchBuddy.

The new LB build is now live, you can get it from here.

I'd also like to thank the recent donations, they do make a difference, thank you to everyone who donated!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2224744672813955603.post-20523745586935710002020-05-29T14:39:00.003+02:002021-09-22T08:09:43.075+02:00Experimental Multibox SupportHi there!

Long time no see. With everything going on it was a bit of a hectic time lately... That is until I got fired because of the corona thing and I had a bit of time on my hand. The new episode was also just released and that got me back into GW2 for a bit and I had a look at the API changes that have come since the last update. The major one was better support for multiboxing, so without further ado, I give you experimental multibox support!

Enabling multiboxing support is a bit involved and will require the popular launcher applications to support the -mumble <filename> command line parameter for GW2. This parameter tells the game instance what to call the mumble connection instead of the standard name MumbleLink, and this allows multiple clients to communicate through this interface without overwriting each others' data. TacO now also supports the -mumble <filename> command line parameter which lets TacO know which Mumble interface to connect to. The rest is handled automatically. In order to be able to run multiple TacO instances, the overlay must also be started with the -forcenewinstance command line parameter.

With my current jobless situation, donations through the paypal button to the right are quite welcome ;)

You can download the new build from here.

Change notes:

TacO now uses the DirectComposition API to be displayed

TacO will now ignore keyboard input when the game's focus is on a textbox. (Trading Post isn't supported)

The controversial range circles feature will from now on be turned off for competitive game modes.

Added the -mumble command line option to specify which mumble link file the TacO instance should use

TacO now figures out which GW2 window to use based on the process id provided in the mumble link

TacO will now automatically exit if it can't find GW2 for a minute during startup. This is to avoid stuck instances with multiboxing.

Map timers for Bjora Marches have been updated

This update brings some changes to the localization strings, non-English translations must be updated by their maintainers.

It's been a while again, real life is taking its toll, but things have been happening in the background. Yesterday a patch I've been waiting for a long while went live, and with it came some new additions to the Mumble link: namely information about the minimap! So after two nights without sleep, I give you the new TacO build that now supports the minimap and the full map as well.

Trails and markers on the minimap

The minimap's location, panning and rotation is automatically tracked, and all the markers can be displayed on there as well. I realize that this might result in sensory overload, so there are options to turn off trails and markers separately for each of the three display modes (in-game 3d, minimap and full map), and new marker category options for marker pack creators to set a preference for a marker category to be displayed in-game, on the maps, or both. Here follow the technical specs of the newly available marker data.
New marker category attributes:

mapDisplaySize - integer value. The size of the marker at normal UI scale, at zoom level 1 on the miniMap, in Pixels. For trails this value can be used to tweak the width of the trail on the map. Default value: 20

miniMapVisibility - boolean value, if 1, the marker/trails belonging to this category will show up on the minimap. Default value: 1.

mapVisibility - boolean value, if 1, the marker/trails belonging to this category will show up on the main map. Default value: 1.

inGameVisibility - boolean value, if 1, the marker/trails belonging to this category will show up in-game, like the markers you're used to. Default value: 1.

scaleOnMapWithZoom - boolean value, if 1, the markers/width of the trails belonging to this category will scale with the zoom level as you zoom in and out. Default value: 1.

mapFadeoutScaleLevel - float value. Zooming out farther than this value will result in the marker/trail fading out over the course of 2 zoom levels. Default value is 100, which effectively means no fading.

keepOnMapEdge - boolean value, only affects markers, not trails. If 1, markers belonging to this category will not disappear as they move out of the minimap's rectangle, but will be kept on the edge like the personal waypoint. Default value: 0.

And now for the change notes:

Markers and trails will now fade out while in the map view

The minimap and world map can now display markers and trails for the current map

Added marker category attributes to control the 2D map displays

3D markers/trails that would be drawn over the minimap are now occluded correctly

Added a Visibility menu that allows the customization of the visibility of markers and trails separately for the 3D in-game view, the minimap and the world map. Each option can be set to default (meaning the marker pack will decide to display the marker or not) and can be forced to be turned on or off

Trail mesh generation has been updated a bit to avoid some of the twists that can happen

Added an option to toggle the unit of the marker distance display to be meters instead of inches

Added an option to toggle the forcedpiaware command line switch from within TacO. Changing this option requires a restart of the overlay to take effect

Added Grothmar Valley map timer

busy week. There have been some interesting requests and TacO is starting to stretch the limits of where the official APIs can take it, for now at least. From least interesting to most, an 1600 range circle has been added (still no user-defined circles, sorry) and a new capability was added to marker categories that will automatically hide the markers in that category if the player has the appropriate achievement already unlocked.

The raid tracker window has been updated. It now features a compact mode that can be toggled on or off, and the individual raids themselves can be toggled on or off to show only interesting information. When a new raid is added through the API it will still automatically show up as before.

Compact raid tracker window

And now for this week's big new feature: I give you the Trading Post Tracker. This window will show you the status of your current buy orders and sell listings, and highlight in red those of them that have been outbid/undercut. Several configuration options include to only show the outbid/undercut items, to only show sell listings/buy orders, and to only show one listing for each item type, the one that is closest to being fulfilled. To make the display a bit more visually useful, the appropriate item icons are downloaded from the API and displayed next to the item names. Since the API to access this isn't real-time, the TP tracker window will also only update every couple minutes. Note, that the window will first open in the middle of the screen and you'll have to place it in Window Edit mode (you can toggle that in the settings submenu)
